World awaits: Murdock’s epic KO win

ROHAN Murdock has moved a step closer to his dream of becoming world champion.

The Gold Coast boxer defeated American super middleweight rival Frankie Filippone by way of technical knockout in Corpus Christi in the US moments ago.

Top boxing promoter Bob Arum had already announced his intentions to pit Murdock in a WBO title showdown in his hometown against reigning champion Gilberto Ramirez - if he proved himself worthy and kept winning.

Murdock held up his end of the bargain in a convincing display, with Filippone adjudged unable to continue fighting after the fourth round.

The rivals had traded heavy blows early but Murdock's superior technique and fitness shined through, allowing him to quickly assert his dominance.

The 25-year-old took full control in the fourth round, twice knocking Filippone to the ground.

Murdock is now expected to fight on an undercard in Mexico in April or May, where another win should secure him a shot at the title.

Ramirez is in action later on the card as the main fight of the night.

Connor O'Brien is travelling to the US at the expense of the Rohan Murdock team.
