Coast camp for 'high-risk' teens

THE Gold Coast has been chosen as one of two locations for a Youth Boot Camp trial by the Newman government's Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie.

The other location chosen was Cairns, where a sentenced youth boot camp will be trialled over the next two years.

The Gold Coast facility will become home to an early intervention youth boot camp which, if successful, will form the template for other resources of the same type to be rolled out across Queensland.

"The selection of these trial locations and models was based on a consultation process which attracted valuable input from community groups," minister Bleijie said.

The Cairns-based program is aimed at young offenders already in the youth justice system who face a custodial sentence while the Gold Coast project will target young people deemed high-risk and who have been referred by police, schools and the health system.

"At this boot camp, staff will work with parents to help change behaviours and attitudes, identify issues in the young person's life and instil the values of self-respect and discipline," he said.

The Queensland government is inviting organisations to apply through a formal tender process to be involved in implementing and operating a camp.

"Choosing service providers for the boot camp trial is part of our Six Month Action plan and is an important step in making sure we can respond to the range of offences being committed by young people in Queensland," minister Bleijie said.
