Gold Coast closes its beaches

GOLD Coast City Council has closed its beaches.

Strong winds, heavy swell and poor visibility from Coolangatta to South Stradbroke Island has forced the decision.

In a statement, the council said beaches were taking a pounding, but they were holding up well with minor erosion being confined to Bilinga, Mermaid Beach and an area between Narrowneck and Main Beach.

Lifeguards and beach maintenance staff are continuing to monitor surf and beach conditions.

The council advised people to stay away from beaches during the severe weather conditions. The Bureau of Meteorology expects the unsettled conditions to continue until Thursday.
