Gold Coast makes a bid to host State of Origin

THE Gold Coast is making a bold bid to host a 2017 State of Origin match in an effort to stamp itself as Queensland's sporting capital.

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate has written to the NRL to try to secure the match at Metricon Stadium, as a test for the expanded and revamped facility ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"Hosting the Commonwealth Games is no easy feat, it is the single largest event in southern hemisphere in a decade requiring significant upgrades to sporting infrastructure," he said.

"It would be prudent to do a dry run ahead of the games and what better than the State of Origin, since the Gold Coast is a border city with NSW."

Cr Tate denied the Gold Coast was trying to steal the game from Brisbane.
