PUBLIC transport on the Gold Coast is a joke.

That was the sentiment expressed at a round-table meeting attended by member for Currumbin Jann Stuckey along with member for Mudgeeraba Ros Bates and state Opposition spokesman for transport Scott Emerson yesterday.

The Liberal-National Party members were concerned with the Gold Coast bidding to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the area would not have the transport arrangements needed to meet demand.

"We have the gateway to Queensland with 5.5 million visitors travelling through and we don't want to go backwards ... We have been neglected for so many years it is a joke," Ms Stuckey said.

Mr Emerson highlighted light rail and heavy rail were two options being discussed.

"People feel the Gold Coast is being ignored ... (and) not getting what they deserve," Mr Emerson said.

"What we are about is engaging with what the Gold Coast, as the sixth biggest city in the country, needs."

Connecting the Southern Gold Coast general manager Jim Wilson attended the meeting and shared the sentiment something needed to be done to fix transport in the area.

"We are competing with international tourist spots that have better movement options," Mr Wilson said.

"The southern Gold Coast has been forgotten."

Mr Wilson said creating more sophisticated transport infrastructure and public transport options would also generate jobs.
