$10 million 350-unit golf resort ready to tee off

A MULTI-million-dollar international standard golf course and 350-unit resort will almost certainly be built in Hervey Bay.

A major regional developer is finalising negotiations on a four or five-star resort along with a 6000 metre, 18-hole course in Eli Waters.

Urban Planet principal Ward Veitch said the land had been planned as a golf resort for some time and permits were in place for the project to move ahead quickly.

He said the course design had been completed and about 65% of the earthworks had already been done on the site, with the developer indicating work could begin as early as the first half of 2014.

Mr Veitch said a new joint venture partner was coming on board and all the approvals were in place.

"They are a serious developer and everyone's quite excited about it," he said.

Members of the public will be able to play the course which is expected to cost about $10 million.

But Mr Veitch said more money would go into the accommodation component.

"The whole thing could be a $50 or $60 million project," he said.

"It will bring a lot of people to this area."

Mr Veitch said the development was an investment into Hervey Bay.

"We're anticipating by about 2017 to have up to 40 or 50,000 rounds of golf played a year," he said.

"The team see Hervey Bay as ready to take off and are aiming at the nearly one million visitors who come into Hervey Bay each year by providing the much-needed facilities as well as linking with other important regional players.

He said the course would be of the standard of Hyatt Coolum or Royal Pines.

Both courses have hosted the Australian PGA Championship.

"We're certainly hoping to match those course standards," he said.
