Good fortune shines as student gives to the elderly
CARE packages were donated to elderly residents at Seabreeze Community Aged Care by a driven Kingscliff High School student.
Year 10 student Jemimah Fortune spent 10 weeks putting together the packages as part of Community Service Project aimed at teaching youth leadership skills.
"This program is great because we connect with the others that are doing the program and get to help out the community through a community service project," she said.
On Wednesday residents were gifted a care pack full of goodies, including a large print puzzle book, pen, notepad, soap, candle, bracelet, cup/mug with teabag, body lotions, a brooch, glow stick, shower cap, scarf, chocolate, lollies, envelopes, toothpaste, toothbrush, hair care samples, Avon moisturiser samples, nail polish, packet of biscuits, lip gloss, washer, flowers and a bible.
All of the items were donated by various people, business houses and churches in the Tweed area and as well as a shop in Victoria.
Jemimah had to research to find and fulfill a community need.
"It was really exciting and when all the donations came in and the bags were getting put together, I began to think about all the people who would receive it," she said.
"And I couldn't wait to give them out.
"People that donated were really happy to give and the more I thought about the elderly people, the more I thought about how this would be special for them."
The teen said it was a rewarding experience.
"I want to leave a legacy from the youth in the community to the aged," she said.
"Now that I have seen the reactions, it has made me want to give.
"The people who got them were so lovely and sweet and some even cried."
