FACILITATING the growing number of tourists who take to Queensland's roads as part of their holidays is at the forefront of a new tourism strategy.
And regional towns and destinations are expected to reap a majority of the benefits.
The State Government on Thursday released its draft strategy for Queensland drive tourism.
Driving tourists - or tourers in industry-speak - are visitors to Australia with three or more stopovers in their trip, including one involving driving to a Queensland destination.
The strategy outlines the Government's focus on improving amenities - including signage and roadside facilities - marketing and road quality for these tourers.
The draft strategy identified regional communities as the drive tourism benefactors and small businesses relied on them for income.
"Drive tourism provides a number of benefits to businesses, particularly to regional and rural communities which are primarily accessible by drive," the strategy stated.
According to Tourism Research Australia, there were 10 million domestic overnight drive visitors in Queensland in the 12 months up until March.
The niche tourism market also accounts for 15,000 Queensland jobs annually.
Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey said the new strategy would bring even more tourers to the state.
"Our regional cities and towns rely heavily on the drive tourism market to support their local businesses, and we want to take advantage of the great opportunities this growing market represents," Ms Stuckey said.
Caravanning Queensland chief executive officer Ron Chapman welcomed the strategy.
"I am pleased to see the current government has recognised the Drive Tourism sector which has long been neglected," Mr Chapman said.

Public submissions are open until November 28.
