Govt wants to hear concerns

QUEENSLAND Deputy Premier Paul Lucas says he would be happy to hear from the Gold Coast City Council about any grievance it has with the state's infrastructure investment plan.

The Qld Government came under fire from Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke because of a lack of direction for the coast in the Queensland Infrastructure Plan.

The QIP identifies the State Government's four-year commitment to infrastructure investment across community services, economy, education and training, energy, health, research, transport and water.

Last week, Cr Clarke attacked the State Government over its infrastructure plan.

“From 2014, it appears the Gold Coast has been cut off the state map and set adrift,” he said.

“In fact, the QIP, which is a 20-year look into what future large-scale infrastructure the state may need from now until 2031, only gives the coast two mentions – the current light rail project and the current university hospital project at Southport.

“Both of these will wrap up in the next three years, so we have effectively been set adrift from then on.”

Mr Lucas, who is also Local Government Minister, said the QIP was out for community consultation.

“Anyone, including Gold Coast City Council, is welcome to attend one of our forums and make a submission,” Mr Lucas said.

“The Gold Coast is by far and away one of the big winners from infrastructure investment by the Bligh Government.

“In 2011-12 the government's infrastructure spend in south-east Queensland is $10.3 billion (which includes the Gold Coast) and equates to $2877 for every person living in the region.”

Mr Lucas said projects included the Robina Health Precinct and $275 million for the Robina Hospital expansion and Pacific Motorway upgrades, including the Varsity Lakes interchange ($140m) and Papas Way – Worongary Interchange upgrade ($158m).

“The QIP would be updated regularly,” Mr Lucas said
