Graduate nurses a boon for Tweed Hospital

TWEED Hospital will welcome new nurses in the latest intake of staff later this month.

Tweed and Murwillumbah hospital's acting director of nursing and midwifery Denise Harris said she was looking forward to welcoming the new graduate nurses who start work on February 18.

"There will be a total of 29 nurses working across the Tweed Byron Health Service Group," Ms Harris said.

"Two will work at Murwillumbah Hospital and two will work at Byron and Mullumbimby hospitals with the remainder working in the Tweed Hospital."

Tweed MP Geoff Provest said the new nurses were a sign that the Tweed Hospital was still expanding.

"Four new mental health and one midwife nurse started today (February 5) and a further 22 graduates will begin work as nurses at the Tweed Hospital in a fortnight," Mr Provest said.

"This, along with the 11 new doctors who have just begun their internships, represents a great youthful boost to medical services at the Tweed Hospital, which is now arguably the North Coast's busiest and most important."

"It will also provide relief for the excellent existing medical staff who have been stretched by increasing demand."

"The new nurses are among 2000 that will start work in NSW hospitals this year, bringing the total number of extra nurses since the change of government to more than 3,000."
