Grampus deny Mariners

NAGOYA Grampus denied Central Coast advancement from the group stages of the Asian Champions League with a 3-0 win in Japan on Wednesday night.

The Mariners needed a win to advance to the knockout stages of the tournament, but fell short after Japanese internationals Keiji Tamada and Jungo Fujimoto netted in the first half, before Marcus Tulio Tanaka's late sealer.

"It's been a wonderful season and I couldn't be prouder of my team," Mariners coach Graham Arnold said.

"The players, the staff and everyone involved with the club has given their all to ensure we earned success this season.

"We played against a very good Nagoya team tonight. I felt that probably up till 80 minutes, even though the score was 2-0, we had our chances but didn't score where they did score their chances."
