Grandmother pumps iron

WHEN this Currumbin bodybuilder is not smashing world records she is bench-pressing bubs.

Coralie Weir added four records to her international haul of 20 at the National Powerlifting Championships in Albury NSW during late August.

The grandmother said when she was not pumping iron she was working in childcare at Panda's Childcare, Elanora.

"At the time my kids were in child care, I started working in it so I could be with them," Weir said.

"Now my kids have got kids in child care."

At the recent championships Weir gained world records in bench press, squats and dead lift in her 52kg weight category, and an overall record across all categories.

While saying her love of the sport and the challenges her coach Frank Manning threw at her were her motivations, a female friend walked past Weir at her Currumbin Waters gym, Genesis, and said "she's always been a good weight lifter".

"She can lift up your car to change its tyre - if your car was dangling over a cliff you'd want Coralie to be there," the friend joked.

Manning said her preparation involved squat, bench and dead lift training, for one and a half hours, four days a week, with a controlled diet keeping her at, below for competition and over for training, her weight category.

"Coralie never misses a session and she's got natural talent," Manning said.

"That's the key to her success."
