Gratis Minds to hold EP launch in August

TWEED Coast hip hop trio Gratis Minds embraces and spreads the positivity through their unique and special blend of music.

After releasing their debut EP in early July, the Cabarita-based hip hip group will hit new Coolangatta hot spot, Spot X Laneway on August 20 for a special live EP launch.

Channelling the classic 90s hip hop sound, the group, made up of lyricists Jon Doe and Tay D and producer and beat smith Jay Orient, combined to form Gratis Minds in Cabarita.

"I've lived in Cabarita for 15 years and we gravitated together for the love of hip hop,” Doe said.

"We were in a big group and saw each other all the time, and were always rapping at parties, then about two and-a-half years ago, we started Gratis Minds.”

Doe said Gratis - a Latin word for "free” - formed the basis of their outlook and message, which channels positivity to spread a new vibe while breaking down the barriers and stigma often associated with the music genre.

"We have a uniqueness and the best way to describe us is very positive,” he said.

"It's not the negative stigma or the aggressive bogan sort of stigma that surrounds Aussie hip hop at times.”

At first look, surf town Cabarita, known for its roots, folk and blues connections, may look an unlikely spot for a hip hop explosion, but with the genre blowing up from Byron Bay to Brisbane, Gratis Minds feels the group's connection with the town helps form the basis of their sound.

"We're from the beach, that's our home and that shines through in our music,” Doe said.

"We bring that beach feel, with a coastal and different vibe and we're very spiritual.”

The group has played multiple live shows and are breaking into the Brisbane scene, with their energetic live shows getting the crowd bouncing and on their feet.

Doe said there were a lot of groups from the region who were planning a revolution of sorts, to carry the torch forward for the next generation of hip hop artists.

"Right now, we're at the forefront of the East Coast to Byron explosion,” he said.

"Hip hop is in a transitional period and the old guys are phasing out, so right now, we're in a good place.”

The EP launch will feature support acts including Byron Bay's Leeze The Kid, Juxtathought, Fountainhead, Signs and Wonders and Go to Midnight.
