Council gives green light for Chinderah pontoon
TWEED Shire Council has approved a 30m boating pontoon for Chinderah - 10m shorter than what was being sought by the Chinderah District Residents Association.
After a lively public meeting, attended by several dozen people on Tuesday, council made a decision on the size and location of the structure on Thursday night.
They backed the original council staff recommendation that the size be reduced from 40m to 30m, and be moved 45m downstream from the original mooted location in front of the Chinderah Tavern.
The association, who approached council to support the pontoon 18 months ago, had argued that 30m was too short for larger boats.
A new development application will now need to be submitted for the pontoon which is expected to cost up to $120,000.
Council successfully applied for a $60,000 grant from the NSW Maritime Better Boating Program towards the pontoon.
The balance will be funded by council, residents and the Taphouse Group.
