Fishing comp a success
ORGANISERS of the Greenback fishing competition, held in Cabarita on the weekend, said it was “a great success”.
Event chairman Stan Dawson said despite the rain the 28th Lions Charity Greenback Tailor Fishing Competition brought many benefits to the community.
Cabarita Beach Pottsville Beach Lions incoming president Vicky Hansen said 560 people of all ages entered the competition.
“[It] was a good result considering the poor weather conditions,” she said.
“We couldn't run the fireworks because it was too wet.”
Brad Tunsted took first prize and received $1500 and a television for the 2.6kg tailor he caught.
His fish and others were sold in the charity fish auction that raised $2844 for local schools and other community organisations.
Ms Hansen said the total amount raised had not been finalised.
The biggest fish was a 6.5kg mulloway that attracted $70 in the charity auction.
The second prize went to David Newell for a 2.3kg tailor.
Dwayne Newell took the men's division for his 20.5kg bag of fish.
Casey Parod won the women's division with 7.29kg in her bag.
In the veterans division, Matt Wisemann came in first place with 13.02kg and Jimmy Clizton bagged 9.025kg worth of fish and took the top junior division prize.
Tweed Heads police spokesman Darren Steel said there were no reports of misbehaviour or illegal activity over the weekend.
