Greens support slumps under Milne

GREENS Leader Christine Milne admits she is disappointed by the latest Newspoll which shows support for the party has dropped to its lowest level since March 2009.

The Greens' primary vote slumped three points to 8% in the Newspoll, published in The Australian.

Senator Milne rejected any suggestion the party's drop in popularity reflected badly on her leadership.

"The Greens have made a choice about my leadership. I noticed that none of you were saying, when the polls remained the same and went up after Bob left, that that was any kind of reflection on him," said Senator Milne, who took over from Bob Brown as leader in April.

"The poll today, it's disappointing of course, especially since we've delivered one of the biggest injections into health care in Australia in decades with dental care ... I know that Australians are delighted that that is going to change. So I'm disappointed that that perhaps is not reflected in the poll, but from my point of view, I'm in the Parliament to lead a party and to engage in the serious issues of the day."

Meanwhile, Labor's momentum appeared to have stalled, dropping two points in the Newspoll to 33%.

This drop came on the back of an 8% surge in support in the past two polls.

The Coalition's primary vote was up one point to 46%. It still held a commanding 55-45% lead on two-party-preferred terms.
