A TWEED furniture designer has made his mark at an internationally acclaimed art festival after showing off a sofa designed with a focus on sustainability.

Greg Lawson of Cabarita Beach exhibited his new sustainable sofa design at the 2011 Fringe Furniture Design exhibition as part of the recent Melbourne Fringe Festival.

The theme of the exhibition was "Dancing in the Dark: small solutions to big problems".

Mr Lawson's sofa, which he dubbed Atlantis, was just such a "small solution" to the world-wide problem of sustainability.

It was made from all sustainable materials such as bamboo plywood, natural latex foam and an eco-wool/bamboo blend fabric.

Mr Lawson who works for Green Room Consulting has been designing furniture inspired by nature since his early 20s and was thrilled to be part of an exhibition that celebrates the diverse and unique talents of emerging designers.

He said he was "elated to be accepted into the exhibition" and is keen to make more furniture.

He grew up surfing on the north coast and then travelled to London to work with a number of architectural firms. "This piece is my response to the growing need for furniture to be sustainable and well designed," Mr Lawson said.

This year's Melbourne Fringe Festival was last week awarded the prestigious Skybus Award for best major event or festival at the RACV Victorian Tourism Awards.

Melbourne Fringe CEO Esther Anatolitis said this year's festival included the work of 3,989 artists in 331 shows in Melbourne and other Victorian venues.
