Guilty verdict for convicted cop killer

CONVICTED cop killer Michael Allan Jacobs is expected to be jailed for life after a Sydney jury found him of murdering Tamworth policeman and father of six, David Rixon.

The fallen highway patrol officer's wife Fiona burst into tears and mouthed "thank you" to the jurors as the verdict was read out on Monday afternoon.

Jacobs is likely to become the first person to receive a mandatory life sentence for the slaying of a NSW police officer under legislation passed earlier this year.

Acting NSW Police Commissioner Catherine Burn told reporters in Sydney on Monday night that while "nothing will bring David back" she hoped the guilty verdict and its significance would bring "some solace" to his grieving family and colleagues.

Sen Const Rixon was gunned down during a routine stop-over outside a West Tamworth unit block in March last year.

In the moments leading up to his death, Sen Const Rixon was recorded on his police microphone calmly talking about a breath test before the shots were fired.

Jacobs could be heard saying "Die...sorry sir, sorry".

Despite his injuries, Sen Const Rixon managed to handcuff the shooter before he died.Outside court, Ms Rixon said the fact that her husband was the only NSW police officer in history to arrest his own murderer was "pretty special" and Monday's outcome was what "David deserved".

Visibly emotional, Act Com Burn said Sen Const Rixon's death had a profound impact on the NSW community and said police were particularly grateful to the people of Tamworth for their ongoing support.

She honoured his wife and children for their "resilience, strength and grace" throughout the court process and said the thoughts and prayers of the entire police family were with them.
