Gulliver stops by Tweed

IT might have been a shock for Tweed Heads shoppers to see a 4.3m dog sitting at the door, but it was all for a good cause.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT had Gulliver, the world’s largest model guide dog, stopping at Tweed City Shopping Centre yesterday to meet locals and raise money and awareness.

Gulliver was a little intimidating for many, but not for the Tweed’s newest guide dog Henry. Henry’s owner Bev Larsson said she could get by without his help.

“I have re-gained my confidence to do things independently, like public transport travel,” she said. “While I may no longer be able to work as a nurse or be a divemaster, which initially made me feel quite useless and a drain on society, I’m learning I can still be creative, it’s just a matter of finding new outlets.”

Guide Dogs Northern NSW regional manager Jeremy Hill said a survey showed people did not “realise that we provide services for those who are starting to lose their vision”.

“Our free services are for people with all sorts of vision loss, whether it is from a disease or an injury, to get about their daily lives safely and confidently,” Mr Hill said.
