Gunmen who shut down Sydney shopping centre still on run

TWO armed gunmen who forced the closure of a major Sydney shopping centre on Monday remain on the run.

Dramatic scenes unfolded outside the Westfield Shopping Centre near Wollongong as heavily armed police surrounded the Hoyts cinema and nearby streets were blocked off.

Initial reports suggested a woman may have been held hostage inside but it was later revealed police were hunting two men which security guards believed were armed with at least one rifle.

A 27-year-old woman was captured by guards and arrested but police have not been able to find the armed men.

The shopping complex was re-opened about 11am.
