TWO mates on their way to a fishing trip at Rainbow Beach were lucky to get only slightly singed today after the 4WD they were travelling in burst into flames.

Driver Steve and his mate Nathan Knight had just left the Victory Store enroute to Rainbow Beach late this morning when they turned the Nissan Patrol’s heater on.

They had just rounded a bend just before the Old Goomboorian Rd adn Tin Can Bay Rd intersection. When they turned the heater on the vehicle immediately began filling up with smoke.

Within seconds it was on fire. They were forced to pull up in the middle of the intersection and jump for their lives, but when they opened the doors and the fresh air blew in they fanned the flames, making the situation worse.

The two fishing buddies were able to escape however one of the men suffered a burnt right foot and some singed leg hairs.

A visibly shaken Steve said he was just grateful his son had opted to stay at home today, as he would have been in the back seat and things could have wound up far worse.
