Hangu hero sacrificed his life to stop school bomber

A 14-YEAR-old schoolboy, who tackled a suicide bomber outside his Pakistan school with about 1000 students inside, has been hailed a hero.

Aitzaz Hassan died in hospital after stopping the bomber, who blew himself up about 150m outside the main gate of the school in the northwestern district of Hangu.

Police said the school had been the target of the bomber.

Friends said Aitzaz told them the man had to be stopped, and ran over to him and tackled him.

"We told him not to do it," a friend said yesterday. "We told him he would be killed."

The incident happened on Monday. Aitzaz's father Mujahid Ali Bangash, 55, said he felt not sadness but pride at his son's death.

"Aitzaz has made us proud by valiantly intercepting the bomber and saving the lives of hundreds of his fellow students," he said.

"I am happy that my son has become a martyr by sacrificing his life for a noble cause."

Mr Bangash was only able to reach his village the day after his son's funeral.
