Hating for religious reasons is always wrong, says MP

A LABOR MP representing Cairns has taken aim at those he says are showing "bigotry towards Muslim Australians", telling Parliament that hatred on the basis of religion or race was always wrong.

Rob Pyne made the speech following an "Australia says Welcome" event held in Cairns, which drew 300 people.

He said those "hateful racists" along with terrorists each played a part in pushing young people towards extremism.

"We know have a situation in this country where violent terrorists (falsely using Islam) are saying to our young Muslims 'You are not a part of this country.  Australia hates you'," he said.

"In a tragic irony this message is now also being spread by the far right.

"So these far right extremists are in fact on a unity ticket with groups like ISIS.  They want the same thing.

"They want to drive the wedge in between young Muslim Australians and the rest of society.  This is a recipe for disaster."
