Have your say on Tugun oceanway

WITH a little "internal fortitude" Gold Coast City Council will simply build a $4.6 million Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway, says Friends of Currumbin president Barry Robinson.

Mr Robinson provided his own feedback about the proposed 1.7km public facility while the council's engineering services committee has requested you do the same.

Committee chairperson Dawn Crichlow said the council had listed $1.6 million for the oceanway's initial 600m.

"And the State Government has now offered conditional funding of $2.3 million for the project should it go ahead," Cr Crichlow said.

Mr Robinson said the oceanway stretching from Coolangatta to Surfers Paradise would have been built 10 years ago if not for affluent home-owners' opposition.

"Resistance to it is mainly from wealthy people tying it up in the courts until the council goes broke.

"On Sydney's waterfront there was a paddock full of millionaires who said 'no', but they passed the legislation anyway.

"You'll get people saying 'oh you know it will threaten dunal structure', 'our privacy will be invaded' or 'crime-rates will soar', but all the great cities of the world make sure they've great walkways along all their waterfronts."

He said the oceanway would be a tourist attraction and the Coast must "do better than high rises and plastic theme parks".

"My idea is tourists can pick up a bike in Surfers and ride to Coolangatta stopping at surf clubs along the way.

"They can put racks on the backs of buses to relax on the way back north, and have a great day," Mr Robinson said.

Cr Crichlow said the committee also recommended improvements for cyclists along Golden Four Dr be investigated.

"We want a report to come back to (the) council summarising public comment on the Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway Planning Report, along with the results of the investigation into Golden Four Dr.
