Hazard shines as Belgium progress in Euros

FOOTBALL: Belgium will face Wales in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals in Lille on Saturday morning (Australian time) after a superb performance from Eden Hazard helped it to a 4-0 thrashing of Hungary.

The Chelsea playmaker was the star of the show along with Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne as Marc Wilmots’ men flexed their muscles in Toulouse.

Hazard scored a fantastic solo goal for Belgium’s third in the 80th minute after Toby Alderweireld headed his team ahead and Michu Batshuayi made it 2-0 when he tapped in after coming on as a substitute.

Yannick Carrasco fired in the fourth in stoppage time to round off a top-quality showing, putting all teams on notice.

Host France set up a quarter-final clash on Monday morning with either England or Iceland, which played tonight, after a come-from-behind win over Ireland.

Robbie Brady gave the Irish a surprise lead from the penalty spot after only two minutes but, roared on by a passionate home crowd, two goals from Antoine Griezmann after the break took France through to the last eight.

The French will be without suspended defender Adil Rami and midfielder N’Golo Kante at the Stade de France, however, after both picked up their second yellow cards of the tournament.

World Cup champion Germany will play either Italy or Spain – also playing tonight – in the last eight in Bordeaux on Sunday morning after a comfortable 3-0 win over Slovakia in the last 16.

Centre-back Jerome Boateng volleyed home from 25 yards to give the Germans the lead before Mario Gomez scored a second.

Julian Draxler made it 3-0 with a near-post volley, while Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil also missed a penalty.

The first quarter-final will be played on Friday morning when Portugal takes on Poland.
