Health-care system on its way

NORTHERN Rivers General Practice Network has launched a campaign to inform Tweed residents about “Medicare Locals”, a term coined by the Federal Government.

They will evolve as an umbrella organisation embracing General Practice Networks across Australia.

The first Medicare Locals will open in July and the aim of North Coast Medical Local will be to improve the integration of local health services, making it easier for people to access services they need.

Northern Rivers General Practice Network CEO Chris Clark said it was an opportunity to improve the capacity, quality and sustainability of primary care services to the community.

“The Commonwealth has just called for applications to form Medi- care Locals and we have about a month to submit our plans,” said Mr Clark.

“We are working with Regional Development Australia to build relationships with other clinical and non-clinical groups to create linked-up health-care systems in our

region.”

Getting all the different primary health-care providers better integrated would be a big thing, with more impact than many would realise, said Mr Clark.
