Heatwave sees heart attack rate double

PARAMEDICS have reported a spike in the number of heart attacks they have responded to after temperatures in Victoria soared.

As the heatwave enters its fourth day, ambulance services have responded to 26 heart attacks, double the normal rate.

Professor Neville Nicholls, from Monash University, said the state's mortality rate was likely to jump by at least 50 per cent as the mercury climbed above 40 degrees for three days running and was forecast to reach 44 degrees on Friday, Fairfax has reported.
