Heavy rain heading to North Coast

THE Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a Flood Watch guide for the Northern Rivers and far North Coast of NSW.

The Bureau says the guide is a kind of "heads up" to people living in the area that flooding could occur in the next few days as a low-pressure system moves down the coast, bringing with it heavy rain and strong winds.

While the Flood Watch is not a full warning, BOM has advised their computer modeling indicates this system "could produce falls in the range of 150 to 300 millimetres over this period with local heavier falls possible."

The Bureau of Meteorology's Regional Director in NSW, Mr Barry Hanstrum, said today that the low has "the potential to bring severe weather with torrential rain and flooding, damaging winds and coastal erosion.

"The weather is expected to deteriorate from Wednesday onwards," he added.

"Our main concern is flooding in the Northern Rivers region and adjacent parts of the Mid North Coast including communities at Lismore, the Lower Tweed and Richmond Rivers and Coffs Harbour. It's too early to pin down exactly where the worst weather conditions will be, but I urge people to maintain a close watch on the latest forecasts and warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology."

Residents living in the Tweed area, Richmond/Wilsons, Brunswick, Clarence - including the Orara and Nymboida Rivers, Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and Nambucca should make preparations in the event flash flooding occurs, with the Bureau adding that people living or working along rivers and streams must "monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop."
