POLICE are searching for a man who recklessly climbed a seven-storey crane at the Quest Apartments' construction site.

Acting officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Jamie Deacon from Toowoomba Police said police were investigating reports of stealing from a crane on Church St.

"Just after midnight on Tuesday morning, an unknown person climbed fencing to a construction site," he said.

"He then got on to scaffolding, the associated building and onto the crane.

"The man removed some property from the crane, but nothing of great value."

Sgt Deacon said the offender didn't climb to the top of the crane.

"He appears to have climbed into the cabin where there was a toolbox and he took some items."

Sgt Deacon said the site was fenced off for a reason and shouldn't be entered by anyone without authorisation.

"It's a work site and there are dangerous items there.

"Climbing structures is another offence and the dangerous nature of the site exacerbated the risk he took," Sgt Deacon said.

He said a security camera had recorded footage of the alleged offender.

"He is described as Caucasian, with short black hair and has a tattoo on his lower right calf muscle.

"Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or their local police station."

Quest Apartments site manager Dave Sullivan declined to comment on the incident.

The Chronicle understands the work site is patrolled by security.
