Hendra vaccine could be here by end of year: CSIRO

A VACCINATION against the potentially fatal Hendra virus could be available for horses by the year's end, according to the CSIRO.

It is unclear what it would cost or how long the vaccine will offer protection.

In an ABC News report, CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory director Professor Martyn Jeggo said it was far more cost effective to produce a vaccine for horses than for people.

"It takes about 10 years to get a vaccine on the market for human infection," he said.
