Hike for Homeless 2014

Early this morning, a group of around fifty hikers gathered at Cudgen and walked to Cabarita Headland to raise awareness of homelessness in our region and collect much needed funds.

Today marked the first day of the North Coast leg of 'Hike for Homeless'.

The event was organised by On Track Community Programs, in conjunction with Byamee and the money raised will be used to support homelessness programs in our local area.

On Tracks Executive Manager, Operations, Tracey Lawson said that "The day was a great success, not only did the community donate over $330, but the conversations we have had with people as we walked past was nothing short of inspiring.

"During the event we talked with people who were experiencing homelessness, people who asked questions about the real challenges people face, people who see locals sleeping in parks and on beaches, everyone we spoke to wanted to help.

"The people in our local community gave generously and really want to make a difference. It is a privilege to live and work in a community who really cares, so thank you to everyone who has made this event such a success.

"But let's not stop there, let's keep having these conversations to continue to raise awareness of how homelessness is impacting our community."

On any given night 28,191 people in NSW are homeless, which is more people than any other state. Of those people, 6274 are children under the age of 18.

These event is running as part of the national Homelessness Week which runs from Monday 4 - Sunday 10 August 2014.
