Town celebrates with cricket match

AUSTRALIA Day celebrations at Tumbulgum split the town in two yesterday with a “around the corner” versus “over the bridge” cricket match.

John Hewitt, captain of the Hillbillies over the bridge, took time out after the game with his sons Ben, 11, and Luke, 9.

“It's the Village People versus the Hillbillies, 20 a side, 20 overs,” Mr Hewitt said.

“It's our first year with a trophy so I guess now it's official.

“Unfortunately the Village People won, 111-97.”

Australia Day committee chairman Don Beck and Ambassador Steve Bastoni were present for the presentation of citizen awards.

Thomas Cloherty received Junior Citizen of the Year, Tumbulgum Public School soccer team received Junior Sports Persons, Bruce Cloherty received adult Sports Person, Heather Steedman received the Citizen Achievement Award and Rowan Campbell was announced adult Citizen of the Year.
