THE best-selling car in Australia right now? Toyota's market fresh HiLux ute.

The HiLux is consistently the best-seller in Queensland and Western Australia, but for the comprehensively revised model to top the country-wide sales charts for October will give immense satisfaction to Toyota.

The HiLux has been Australia's best-selling 4x4 for the past 17 years, and third best-selling vehicle overall the past seven.

Just behind the HiLux (3339) on the October sales charts was Toyota's Corolla (3271), followed by the Hyundai i30 (2669), Ford's Ranger ute effort (2597) and Mazda3 (2582).

Toyota secured a mighty 18% of the market last month, followed by Hyundai with 9.5% and Mazda with 9%.

For stat lovers, year-to-date sales are up 3.6% on last year, and Australian new car sales are expected to top 1.1million for the year.

This year's strong sales have been led largely by the growth of the SUV market, which seems to be on a relentless path to domination.

Small SUV sales (think Mazda CX-3, Hyundai ix35) have increased a mighty 37% compared to the same period last year; medium SUV sales (like Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4) are up 20% and large SUV sales (Toyota Prado, Subaru Outback) up nearly 12%.
