Historic day for Uki village
UKI village celebrated the 100-year anniversary of its public hall and the St Columba's Church yesterday, with hundreds of people flocking to mass and a special morning tea at the hall.
The two buildings were constructed by the people of Uki from local timber, with land donated by pioneer farmers in the district, including Jeremiah Hanrihan, great uncle of Uki Centenary Committee member Barbara Cook.
“There are many wonderful memories for me in these buildings,” she said.
Ninety-year-old local Joy Armour was something of a celebrity as she mingled with visiting relatives and spoke about photos of her family dis- played in the public hall.
“For me, it's a walk through my life, and it stirs many special memories,” Mrs Armour said.
“This is a marvellous day and one I never thought I'd live to see.”
A special mass and communion was held at St Columba's Church, where a picture of St Mary McKillop was blessed by Father David Gilbey.
Acolyte, John Reynolds assisted with the mass and communion. His father was one of the first altar boys at the church.
“That gives me a real sense of belonging and an attachment to the church,” Mr Reynolds said.
Sarah Alexander from Murwillumbah viewed photos of her grandpar- ents who were born at Uki.
“It's a real thrill to see my family represented in history,” Ms Alexander said.
“It's special for me.”
