History book is above par
MURWILLUMBAH Golf Club Historical Committee has produced a book on the club's history in time for its 80th anniversary celebrations this weekend.
With Pick & Putter: The History of the Murwillumbah Golf Club, turns back the clock with stories and images from the past 80 years.
Committee chairman Barry Bright said there was a lot of fact checking needed and some censoring to get the information compiled.
"Three years ago the five of us got together and started the project," Mr Bright said.
"We had to interview a lot of people.
"But we are extremely proud of what we produced. We need to do something like this to preserve the history of the club.
"We found a whole lot of photos in a box underneath the clubhouse."
Mr Bright said many images were also received from the community.
"This celebration is for the town because this club is a big part of Murwillumbah," he said.
The book starts from when John Bromley put an advertisement in The Tweed Daily in 1931 for expressions of interest in forming a Murwillumbah golf club at the showgrounds, to the $1 million renovation of the clubhouse in 2008.
"In 1957 this land was purchased, now we have 44 hectares of golf course that's considered a jewel," Mr Bright said.
Mr Bright said a lot had changed at the club since its early days.
"It probably was considered an elitist game many years ago, but that is long dead," he said.
Committee member Ken Forster organised about 400 images to be included in a CD with the book.
"It has become a game for everyone," Mr Foster said.
"The dress has also become much more casual."
The golf club planned to include the book in a time capsule to be opened in 20 years at the club's 100th anniversary. The book and CD is available from the Murwillumbah Golf Club.
