Hockeyroos lose decider to Argentina after shoot-out drama

HOCKEY: The Hockeyroos were forced to settle for silver at the Champions Trophy in Mendoza after losing 3-1 to hosts Argentina in a dramatic shoot-out.

The scores were locked at 1-1 at full-time after Kathryn Slattery's goal just after half-time was matched by a penalty corner from Argentina's Florencia Habif.

Eight-time world player of the year Luciana Aymar (pictured) opened the scoring for the home side in the shoot-out, but her goal was appealed by the Aussies, replays showing it did not fully cross the line after hitting both posts and rebounding out. The appeal was waved away.

The silver medal capped off a good 12 months for the Hockeyroos, who won silver medals at the World Cup and World League Finals, gold at the Commonwealth Games and have risen to No.2 in the world rankings.

Australia's men's team drew 4-4 with Belgium in its second game of the Champions Trophy in India.
