Holidaying police officer tackles crooks in Kingscliff

Initial report. 11:09am: Two thieves who ambushed Kingscliff Beach Hotel staff en route to the bank have been caught by an off-duty Queensland police officer.

The police officer chased and tackled one of the offenders who was wielding a knife.

Tweed police crime coordinator Stuart Crawford said two staff members were walking, with the weekend's takings, when they were attacked by two males.

The staff members managed to catch one of the thieves but the other got away.

Within minutes the escaped thief came back with a knife. He was eventually chased down and tackled to the ground by the off-duty officer who is in the Tweed on holidays.

Kingscliff Police arrived and charged both offenders, one a Tweed Heads man, 27, the other a Toowoomba man, 29, with aggravated robbery.

The duo will appear at Tweed Heads Local Court today.
