Tom Maynard death shocks Hollioake

FORMER England and Surrey County Cricket Club captain Adam Hollioake was in mourning on the Sunshine Coast yesterday.

Tragedy had struck his beloved Surrey for the third time in 15 years following the death of another talented young player.

First the London club lost wicket-keeper Graham Kersey when he was killed in a car crash near Brisbane in 1997 and then Hollioake's younger brother Ben, an England all-rounder, died in a car crash in Perth 10 years ago. He was 24.

The painful memories came flooding back for Hollioake after he heard the news that Tom Maynard, the 23-year-old son of his good mate, former Glamorgan and England batsman Matthew Maynard, had been killed after being hit by a London Underground train near Wimbledon Park Station.

Mystery surrounds the circumstances of his death after police said Maynard had earlier fled on foot from officers following a traffic stop for 'erratic' driving.

An hour later his body was found on the tracks.

Earmarked as an England batsman in the making, Maynard started his career with Glamorgan before joining Surrey at the start of last season and also played for England Lions, the national A team.

He scored four first-class hundred, his maiden century coming against Glamorgan just months after leaving the club for Surrey following the sacking of his father as head coach.

Hollioake, who captained Surrey from 1997 until 2003, said he was struggling to come to terms with what had happened.

"I'm totally numb ... speechless to be honest," Hollioake, who played four Tests for England and 35 ODIs of which he was captain in 14, said. "It just brings back so many terrible memories for me personally.

"First it was Graham (Kersey), then my bro and now Tom. It's as though we are cursed at Surrey or something.

"I am feeling so bad for Matthew (Maynard) right now.

"It's no good at all what's happened.

"Everyone should treasure every moment with loved ones."
