‘Honest thief’ returns bike with note

AN HONEST thief shocked a Charters Towers resident by returning a stolen bike, and leaving a note to explain why he took it.

Beverley Richards, who posted the note on Townsville social media pages tonight, described the man as an "honest thief" after he returned a bike.

"Thanks for the lend of the bike very sorry I was drunk and had to get home," the note, posted on Facebook, read.

"So sorry I didn't return the bike sooner," the man wrote, signing off as "Drunk guy who stole the bike".

The post has gone viral on social media pages in Townsville with some praising Charters Towers residents for their honesty.

"That's why he got it back, they make 'em honest in the country," one resident said.

Kera Myers originally posted the note writing: "#Thanksdrunkguy!"

"So this note was attached to my son's bike when returned to this bus stop this morning.

"Can't stay mad at that!

"When the bike was returned to the bus stop it was a relief but when I read the note that he left all was forgiven," she told The Bulletin.

"There was no way I could hold a grudge for that, regardless if he made it - the story about being drunk - up or not it certainly was a great laugh."

The case comes after thieves in British Columbia returned a child's dirt bike with a new lock, an oil change and a full tank of gas after being shamed on Facebook.

CTV News reports Mission woman Mel Flesher took to Facebook to bemoan the theft of her boyfriend's child's dirt bike from their apartment complex.

The next morning Ms Flesher found the bike where it had been taken with a note saying that the thieves had purchased "a new, more secure lock," topped off the gas and even changed the bike's oil.

"Dear rightful owners," the note read.

"Although not an excuse, me and my friend figured it would belong to some teenager who has outgrown it. When we read your Facebook post we immediately knew we had to take it back."
