Hornet flyover for Anzac Day

MORE than 1000 spectators will line Main St, Murwil- lumbah, on Anzac day to pay their respects and witness Australia's leading air-combat fighter.

The F/A-18F Super Hornet will fly past as part of a tribute to all Australians who have served, including Murwillumbah soldier Private Nathan Bewes.

Private Bewes was tragically killed by an improvised explosive device while serving his country in Afghanistan in July last year.

Murwillumbah RSL sub-branch president Derek Sims said he was looking forward to seeing the Super Hornet fly and was expecting a huge crowd.

“I believe that flying straight down Main St will go over really well,” Mr Sims said.

“We usually get about 1000 spectators,” he said.

Mr Sims said this year's service was particularly important in order for the people of Murwillumbah to honour fallen soldier Private Bewes.

“It's the first service since his death,” Mr Sims said.

“Teresa Harding from the Amberley Royal Australian Air Force base offered us the Super Hornet flypast because she is from this area originally and knew Nathan was from here.”

An RAAF spokeswoman said it would be hard to miss the sound of the

Super Hornet as it passed over Murwillumbah.

“The F/A-18F Super Hornet is Australia's leading-edge air-combat capa- bility with jet engines that will definitely be heard on the day,” she said.

“I am pleased that everyone participating will see, and definitely hear the Super Hornet.”

The march-past will begin in Brisbane St, turning into Murwillumbah St at 10.30am.

Those who wish to march can assemble in Brisbane St, so long as they march at the rear of the veterans and display their medals on their right-hand side.

The Super Hornet will fly past as the march-past begins to assemble at 10.21am.

The original Hornet was developed for the US Navy and Marine Corps and has been a very successful aircraft.

The F/A-18F Super Hornet is a highly capable, battle proven, multi-role aircraft and is larger than the original model.
