CUDGEN showed its strength with the willow to take a 146-run first-innings win over Terranora in round two of the LJ Hooker League.

The Hornets made short work of Terranora's 161-run total, and after starting the day at 2-51, went on to compile an imposing score of 9-267.

Terranora was sent in to bat again, and lasted 30 overs to finish at 3-95, to keep Cudgen from an outright win.

Jamie Wilson (52) was in ominous form in an innings where almost all the Hornets' willow wielders made contributions.

Captain Terry Wilson (35no) continued to build form, while Aaron Laycock (36) was another to impress.

Teenager Ryan McCloy, 16, came into the Hornets line-up in place of the not out Caleb Zeibell, who was away on representative duties, and made 23 runs.

Even night watchman Damien King (23) was in on the run-making action.

Captain Wilson identified batting strength as an area where the Hornets could improve this year, as the team attempts to claim an elusive premiership, and was pleased to see many players make starts on Saturday.

"We stuck to it and everyone contributed really well," he said.

"Everyone got a bat yesterday, and we gave ourselves the opportunity to get outright points, but Terranora stuck in there, to their credit.

"We are happy because everyone got a bit of time in the middle, and it sets up an interesting match next week against Ballina."

Wilson said it was impressive seeing McCloy play first grade.

"Ryan came and filled in for Caleb Zeibell and batted really well.

"It was really, really impressive.

"Even Damien King, who usually bats at number 11, came in as night watchman and batted well.

"It was an all-round effort."

Terranora's Grant Thompson was the best of the bowlers on Saturday, picking up the wickets of four Cudgen batsmen, including Jamie Wilson and Aaron Laycock.

Cudgen is on top of the ladder after two rounds, on percentage, with five teams on 11 competition points.

Ballina Bears are third, having taken a three-wicket win over reigning premier Casino at the weekend.

Cudgen and Ballina meet on Saturday at Fripp Oval, in what will be a hard-fought clash.

"It will be a good game. Last year we beat them twice, but before that we hadn't had much luck against them and it is a difficult game to play away from home."
