Hornets seek major prize

THESE three boys are some of the brightest young talents in the game of rugby league on the Tweed.

All boast Group 18 representative experience and two are set to play with Gold Coast Titans youth teams in coming seasons.

But despite the representative success, there is one thing that really bugs Josh Bentley, Jaysea Smith and Addicas Turnbull.

That is, they have never tasted Group 18 Junior Rugby League premiership success with their beloved club team, the Cudgen Hornets.

Try to talk to the star trio about their representative achievements and goals in the sport, and, like typical teenage boys, they are a bit quiet.

But ask the 14-year-olds about the Hornets, and they immediately open up.

The three boys have played at the club together for years.

Bentley and Smith have played together since the under-7s, while Turnbull arrived not long after.

They are annoyed that with the talent in this Cudgen squad, they have never tasted the success of a premiership in the Group 18 Junior Rugby League competition.

With Bentley at lock, Smith at prop and Turnbull at five-eighth, Cudgen has solid players in key positions, and they aren't the only representative players in the team.

The rest of Group 18 should watch out next season, because the Hornets are keen to make up for some disappointments in previous years.

"We've got about five rep players in our team, but we just haven't been able to click and that has cost us," Bentley said.

"Hopefully we will be able to change that next year," he said.

The team has a new coach and the players have faith he will bring the team some success next year.

"He is going to try to turn the team around," Smith said.

What could bring the Cudgen under-15s success in next year's competition is fitness, and that is something that will be addressed in coming weeks during pre-season training.
