New bub and home rise from the ashes for Cannon family
TEARS and sorrow have been replaced by big smiles on the faces of a young couple who lost everything in a house fire last week, after they welcomed a new member into their family.
James and Amanda Cannon's new son, Slater Frank Cannon, arrived just after 7pm Wednesday.
"It's the best thing that's happened, it brightens everything up," Mr Cannon said from beside Amanda's hospital bed.
"It puts a smile on your face after everything that's happened."
Slater, who was three days overdue, weighed a healthy 8lb 13oz, or 3.68kg.
The couple and their four other children, Cypress, 10, Memphis, 9, Scarlet Rose, 6, and Hunter, 4, lost everything when their house burned down at Glasshouse on Sunday, July 28.
Mrs Cannon was 39 weeks pregnant at the time.
Slater was one of two name options suggested by Mr Cannon after Queensland's eighth rugby league State of Origin series win.
"I said to my wife I had Lockyer and Slater as (name) choices. At the time, she hated both of them, but now that he's here she said it suits him.
"Darren Lockyer, he's a legend, and (Billy) Slater, he's awesome too.
"When I first mentioned them, there was no way in hell that she would have them."
Slater's middle name, Frank, is Mrs Cannon's father's middle name.
The new arrival also comes as the family will this morning pick up the keys to a new rental property.
