Huawei Mate 10 review: Bang for buck vs iPhone X, Note8

COMING hot on the heels of the release of Apple's iPhone X and Samsung's Note8, Huawei's Mate 10 is facing some stiff comparisons.

But for a phone with a price tag under $900, it is a clear winner on bang for buck.

We loved the Leica cameras that came with its predecessor the Mate 9 and they've only got better, as you would expect from China's phone giant.

Sure it's non OLED screen is not as dazzling as the iPhone X or Note8, but for someone who wants a phone that will charge quickly, work fast, take great photos, and still has extra storage and a headphone jack, there's a lot to be said for the Mate 10.

After using the iPhone X, however, I've found it to be a little too large and chunky.

But it's beefy body is understandable when you consider all the tech under the hoon.

The Huawei Mate 10 features the Kirin 970 chipset with AI built in through a Neural-network That engine assists the phone's cameras to recognise thirteen scenes such as sunset, portrait, food, night shot and adjust the camera settings accordingly.

Co-engineered with Leica, the dual camera system features an impressive aperture of f/1.6 for both lenses, improving low light performance.

For those of us ageing a little, the beauty mode for selfies is particularly good. I look about 10 years younger - something that will no doubt appeal to the Insta crowd.

The dual camera system also offers portrait mode giving good depth of field and live photos similar (but not as good) as those on the latest iPhones.

The power and power management system on the Mate 10, which has a 4000mAh battery, is exceptional, as is the super charging.

In 30 minutes, you are at 58% - enough for a day's use for the average person.

The 5.9 inch screen offers 730 nit brightness and is also handles HDR 10 content.

There are some particularly cool features on the phone, include 3D selfie, an IR blaster which allows you to use your phone as a TV remote and Microsoft Translator - which is super handy if you are travelling.

For gamers, the graphics processing unit (GPU) is even better, the new generation Mali G72 MP12-core GPU.

For business users, it also outputs to a TV or monitor to create a desktop experience.

The gorilla glass backed Mate 10 comes with its own screen protector and soft touch case, making it very good value out of the box.

It does, however, lack the full immersion waterproofing of more expensive rivals.

If you are an Android user, it's certainly a premium feeling phone worth checking out.

For those wanting an even better Huawei, the Mate 10 Pro launches on December 4 for $1099.
