Human remains wash up on beach

KINGSCLIFF beachgoers on Saturday morning found part of a human jawbone on Salt Beach.

Tweed Heads Police duty officer Acting Superintendent Brad Stewart said members of the public found the bone with five teeth attached and reported the matter to surf lifesavers on duty.

"It appears it is a small part of a human jawbone, about an inch long," Acting Supt Stewart said.

"It was below the high tide mark when they found it so the surf lifesavers have secured it.

"Police have attended the scene and photographed the area and secured the remains."

Supt Stewart said further details were not yet available.

"The coroner knows about it and it will be sent to Newcastle for examination," he said.

A Surf Life Saving Far North Coast Branch media spokesman said the jawbone particle was found near marker No.10 just before midday.

Police then arrived on the scene and put the remains into a bag.

"We really know that much about it," he said.
