Hundreds cast off for Greenback
A WEEKEND of non-stop rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of contenders in this year's Lions Greenback Fishing Competition held at Cabarita Beach.
"Despite poor conditions we had over 500 competitors and the fishing was good," said president of Cabarita/Pottsville Lions Club, Vicky Hansen.
"There were plenty of fish for the charity auction and for those who didn't get a chance to catch a fish, they could buy one."
The winner of the heaviest tailor was Steve Eurnold of Tweed Heads South, weighing in at 2.773kg.
Mr Eurnold won himself $1500 in cash sponsored by the Cabarita Beach Hotel and $500 in electrical goods sponsored by Rory Curtis Good Guys, Tweed Heads South.
The second heaviest tailor was caught by Bryan Layton from Tintenbar, near Lismore who won $1000 in cash sponsored by J and K Fowler Builders and $500 in electrical goods also from Rory Curtis Good Guys.
There were 45 lucky competitors draws, including the main prize of a Stessco Boat and Yamaha motor valued at over $6000 won by Leslie Middleton of Cabarita.
"I'd like to say a very big thank you to Lions Club members and volunteers from the Cabarita Surf Life Saving Club, Tweed District Volunteer Rescue, Bogangar Public, School, Pottsville Public School, members of the public and our valued sponsors," Ms Hansen said.
"Without their assistance we could not hold the annual competition.
"We do not have any paid volunteers and all money raised is given to our nominated charities.
"Thanks are also due to all the competitors.
"We are looking forward to fine weather for the 2013 event which will once again be held on the June long weekend."
