Hundreds roll in to compete in Kingscliff Triathlon

IT was an early start for competitors in the Kingscliff Triathlon on Sunday.

The seaside town was buzzing with fun spectators and fit competitors ready to dominate at the bi-annual event from 6.15am.

Almost 1000 keen athletes competed in races that targeted people of all age groups and skill levels.

Southern Stars team member Annette Daniel said she was always keen to come down to Kingy to compete.

"It's a great day here," she said.

"Even though the weather was a bit wet it was still great."

The former Murwillumbah resident said the team had 15 keen members who all made it to triathlon.

Daniel's said she'd only been into the sport for 3 years.

"This is something I've always wanted to do," Daniel's said.

"I went into a bike shop and saw an advertisement."

It all went for there, now she trains weekly with her coach and team mates.

Gloomy skies did not slow the team down although team mate Jade Sawtell said it made the bike section a bit slippery.

QSM Sports event manager Sebastien Krantz said 960 competitors competed in 9 different categories.

"We had 120 kid competitors, 400 in the smaller categories and 400 in the Olympic categories," he said.

"It went very well; everything was on track even though the weather was pretty bad."

Mr Krantz said this month's event had more traffic control and police monitoring the race.

"This event is well on the way to become an event that the whole of Australia will look forward to," he said.

"We're very, very happy with how today went."

The Kingy Tri will take place on December 21.
