Hunt for survivors continues after Chinese disaster

THE hunt was on yesterday for survivors of a freak storm that killed at least 98 people in and around the city of Yancheng in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu.

The storm hit on Thursday afternoon, delivering hail, hurricane-strength winds and a tornado that destroyed buildings, flipped cars and trucks, snapped wooden power poles and crumpled steel electricity pylons.

The rainfall was so great that rivers ran through some residential and industrial areas.

More than 800 people were injured, Xinhau News reported.

Heavy rain and the threat of storms were slowing rescue efforts.
