Kirra hold-up on taskforce's radar
THE Gold Coast's new violent crime taskforce has started work, with Monday's armed robbery at Kirra Sports Club near the top of the list.
Detective Acting Superintendent Garry Watts said seven of the eight crimes were on what police called “hard targets”.
“Kirra was included because we had a firearm involved,” Sup Watts said.
“The investigators are a committed and talented group. They will be working at the coalface in investigating these crimes.”
Det Watts said the community was concerned and Crimestoppers had received a number of calls police were investigating.
“We have established some links with these crimes,” he said.
Det Watts said the operations were confidential, but he did confirm a few groups were on the police radar.
South East Region regional crime coordinator, Detective Acting Superintendent Tim Trezise, said there was no animosity between Gold Coast police and the new taskforce.
“It's quite the opposite – there's always too much to do and things always come up,” Det Trezise said.
The taskforce is made up of temporary detectives from State Crime Operations Command, with permanent positions on the taskforce likely to be decided in the next financial year.
On Monday a man attacked a manager at the front doors of the Kirra Sports Club about 6am and threatened him with a firearm.
The assailant forced the manager to open the safe on the club's second floor before tying him up.
The gunman escaped on foot with the weekend takings.
This serious incident was referred to Taskforce Resolve, which started on the coast that same morning.
The violent crime taskforce was formed after the shooting death of Senior Constable Damian Leeding, who was responding to an attempted armed robbery on the Gold Coast.
Sen Const Leeding was shot in the head and died in hospital a few days later.
Queensland Police's Taskforce Resolve is made up of 18 detectives who are targeting violent crimes in the south east region.
The eight crimes on the taskforce's radar include the Kirra Sports Club robbery and the Tallai Country Club robbery on April 14.
These robberies are also the only two of the eight committed in 2011.
