Hurst takes out his ninth open surf title at Kirra champs

IN PERFECT conditions, competition wrapped up today at the National Surf Life Saving Championships at North Kirra.

Veteran competitor Ky Hurst took out his ninth win in the open surf race, proving too strong for a star-studded field.

In contrast to Hurst's victory, 17-year-old Georgia Miller upstaged her more experienced rivals to claim victory in the open women's surf race.

A small clean swell pushed into shore, providing tight racing in all water disciplines.

Only the leading ski competitors were able to really get a margin on their rivals with a long ride from the outside bank.

Tight finishes were a feature of the day, with the men's under-17 ironman event coming down to the wire with a handful of competitors in the hunt.

Leaders of the race had to wait several minutes after the finish for adjudicators to find a winner via replay.

There was also some drama in the flags event; the men's semi-final was shrouded in controversy with an official protest lodged after some argy bargy for a flag.

All in all it was a fairly drama-free event this year which organisers would have been pleased with.
